Canary Islands Parliament’s Board Heads to Fuerteventura

The Governing Board (Mesa) of the Parliament of the Canary Islands held its ordinary session on Thursday, 9 October, on the island of Fuerteventura. The aim was to bring parliamentary activity closer to the archipelago’s islands. The meeting took place at the Cabildo headquarters and included a session with the island’s Chamber of Commerce.

The relocation of the Board follows a decision made at the start of the legislative term to hold itinerant meetings on every island. Astrid Pérez, president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands and of the Board, attended together with:

  • Ana Oramas, First Vice‑President (Canarian Nationalist Party)
  • Gustavo Matos, Second Vice‑President (Canarian Socialist Party)
  • Mario Cabrera, First Secretary (Canarian Nationalist Party)

The Second Secretary, Patricia Hernández (Canarian Socialist Party), was absent.

Before the formal session, Lola García, president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, welcomed the delegation, who signed the Book of Honor. A subsequent meeting was held with representatives of the Chamber of Commerce of Fuerteventura, also attended by island deputies.

“I want to express my gratitude to the Cabildo of Fuerteventura for allowing us to hold the Board’s session here on the island. The Board is the governing body of the Parliament of the Canary Islands and, although its seat is in Tenerife, our duty is for the Parliament to be present in every Canary Island, because it is the primary autonomous institution.” – Astrid Pérez

President Pérez recalled that the agreement to hold meetings outside the main seat was adopted unanimously by all members at the start of the term and added:

“Obviously, Canary citizens cannot all travel to the Parliament’s headquarters, but the Parliament and its governing body can come to every island, as we are doing.”

She also thanked Mario Cabrera, first secretary and deputy for Fuerteventura, “for his help and availability in making this meeting possible on the island.”

Meeting on the Africagua Project with the Chamber of Commerce

After the parliamentary session, the Board met with officials from the Official Chamber of Commerce of Fuerteventura. The meeting was led by Vice‑President Soledad Monzón Cabrera and technical officer Sofía Morales Betancort, who presented the Africagua 2025 Project—an initiative promoting cooperation on sustainability, water, and energy between the Canary Islands and Africa.

Other participants included:

  • Natalia Esther Santana, deputy of Nueva Canarias
  • Rafael Nogales Gómara, deputy of the PSOE

The Africagua project aims to strengthen trans‑Atlantic collaboration on critical environmental challenges, aligning with regional development goals.
