Canary Islands population growth stabilizes at 2.27 million people

The population increased in the islands by 501 people in the last quarter, a 0.02 % rise

The resident population of the Canary Islands grew by 501 people in the fourth quarter of 2025 (+0.02 %) and reached 2,272,734 inhabitants on 1 January 2026, according to the Continuous Population Statistics (ECP) published Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

In Spain as a whole, the number of inhabitants rose by 81,520 individuals during the fourth quarter, reaching 49,570,725 people on 1 January this year, which represents the highest value in the historical series, driven by an increase in births abroad that surpassed 10 million for the first time. The estimated annual population growth was 442,428 people.

The increase in Spain’s population was due to the rise in people born abroad, while the number of those born in Spain declined. The foreign‑born population stood at a total of 10,004,581 people and was larger than the foreign‑nationality population, due to processes of acquiring Spanish nationality.

7.2 million foreigners: 14.6 % of the population

Meanwhile, the number of foreigners grew by 56,431 people in the last quarter of 2025, reaching a total of 7,243,561. Consequently, the share of foreigners in Spain on 1 January 2026 was 14.6 %. The Spanish‑nationality population increased by 25,089.
