Canary Islands to host European regional parliamentary session with CALRE plenary

The Parliament of the Canary Islands will host, on Wednesday 28 January 2026, the plenary session of the Conference of European Regional Legislative Assemblies (CALRE) – a forum that brings together the regional parliaments of Europe and is currently chaired by Astrid Pérez, president of the Canary Islands autonomous chamber.

The meeting will gather presidents of legislative assemblies from several EU member states, including Austria, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Germany and Portugal, marking a key moment for dialogue and institutional cooperation at the European level.

The day’s programme will:

  • Begin with the Standing Committee meeting, followed by the Plenary Assembly where the main items on the Conference agenda will be debated.
  • Present the balance of work carried out by the Canary presidency in 2025, highlighting efforts to strengthen democratic participation, enhance cohesion among regional parliaments, and energise working groups.

Among the initiatives promoted during the Canary presidency are new forms of institutional communication, such as the first CALRE videopodcast dedicated to the migration phenomenon from the perspective of the territories, held last November on the island of Lanzarote.

According to a statement released by the autonomous chamber, the agenda will kick off at 10:30 a.m., after a media briefing and the traditional family photo in the main courtyard of the Parliament of the Canary Islands.

During the session, the CALRE Awards will be handed out to six projects submitted by different European parliaments, and the election of the new Assembly presidency will take place, leaving the chair of Astrid Pérez vacant.
