Canary Islands upgrade tourism observatory with AI to improve decision‑making

The Government of the Canary Islands has unveiled an upgraded Tourist Observatory, a tool that integrates artificial intelligence and big data with the aim of turning raw data into strategic decisions for the tourism sector.

Tourism and Employment Councilor Jéssica de León highlighted that this update will transform scattered information into useful knowledge for administrations, businesses, and citizens.

“We are providing the sector with a tool that facilitates decision‑making and helps improve the tourism model,” she said.

The presentation ceremony, held at the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, also featured the Vice‑Councilor of Tourism José Manuel Sanabria and the Managing Director of Tourism for the Canary Islands José Juan Lorenzo.

The new version of the Observatory includes visual and dynamic tools that allow progressive analysis of information, as well as an AI‑powered conversational assistant that gives users access to data without requiring technical expertise.

Among the main innovations is a tourist flow radar, which tracks the movements and behaviors of residents and visitors across the territory, providing key insights for destination planning.

The system relies on cloud technologies, machine learning, and massive data processing, establishing a tourism intelligence model focused on sustainability and competitiveness. It also integrates economic, social, and environmental information through the Canary Islands Tourism Information System.

The Observatory is organized around three pillars: analysis and knowledge generation, digital dissemination, and analytical support, offering technical advice to administrations, media, and researchers.

Regional officials stress that this tool will strengthen cooperation between the public and private sectors, enabling more efficient management of the tourism destination and aligning strategies with real market needs.

With this renewal, the Canary Islands move toward a smarter, data‑driven tourism model aimed at continuous improvement of the sector.
