Canary Ports Installs New “Starlight” Lights at Morro Jable Pier

The regional authority is allocating €163,000 for the project, which will be executed by the awarded company Imesapi SA over a two‑month period, installing lighting that respects night‑sky protection.

The Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Canary Islands government, through the public‑enterprise entity Ports of the Canary Islands, has awarded the contract to upgrade the public lighting at the Morro Jable port in the municipality of Pájara, Fuerteventura.

Imesapi SA will carry out the works, which have a budget of €163,846.32 and an estimated execution time of two months. The project aims to replace the existing first‑generation LED luminaires and projectors that currently illuminate the port. These fixtures are known for low electricity consumption and high illumination capacity. In addition, the contract includes a complete renewal of the electrical installations associated with the public lighting system. Planned actions cover:

  • Updating the electrical circuits,
  • Replacing the access covers in the manholes, and
  • Modernising the control and protection panel.

“The initiative is part of our commitment to energy efficiency and the EcoPorts sustainable development model,” said José Gilberto Moreno, Managing Director of Ports of the Canary Islands. “This upgrade will guarantee efficient, environmentally‑friendly lighting that aligns with the Starlight initiative, minimising glare toward the sky, preventing light pollution, and ensuring safety throughout all areas.”

The measure will also enhance the visibility of the archipelago’s starry sky and help mitigate the impact of glare on migratory birds by reducing interference with their flight routes, thereby decreasing the ecological footprint on nearby ecosystems.
