Capital City Allocates Over 20,000 Sq Meters for Public Housing
The municipal council of Puerto del Rosario has sent a letter to the Canary Islands Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, expressing its full willingness to transfer municipal land to facilitate the construction of new public and social housing in the municipality.
A Call to Address the Housing Emergency
Mayor David de Vera conveyed the governing coalition’s concern over the current housing emergency in the Canary Islands, officially recognised by Decree‑Law 1/2024. He stressed the urgent need to provide families with dignified and affordable homes.
“Puerto del Rosario cannot remain on the sidelines of the housing emergency affecting the Canary Islands. Therefore we are making several municipal lands available to the Government of the Canary Islands so they can be prioritised for public rental housing or other schemes that ease access for families in greatest need,” said Mayor David de Vera.
Seven Parcels Ready for Immediate Development
The council has identified seven parcels scattered across the municipality—areas such as El Matorral, Barrio Nuevo, Zurita, and the vicinity of Calle Cisneros—totaling more than 20,000 m². These sites are ready for immediate hand‑over, allowing the regional government to launch new protected‑housing projects with swift administrative procedures and coordinated institutional effort.
“After years without new public‑housing developments, we want to reverse this trend and provide real solutions for our neighbours. This council is prepared to work closely and faithfully with the Government of the Canary Islands and the Canary Islands Housing Institute to accelerate all necessary procedures,” added the mayor.
Urgency and Social Commitment
Housing councillor Toñi Fernández Aragón highlighted the need for rapid implementation, noting the growing demand for homes in the municipality.
“Many families approach the council seeking an opportunity to obtain a decent home. From the Housing department we are committed to working alongside the Government of the Canary Islands so these parcels become real, affordable homes for our residents,” she explained.
“Access to housing must not remain a privilege. Our goal is to ensure that Puerto del Rosario is a municipality where no one is left behind because of lack of resources or opportunities,” Fernández Aragón added.
Commitment to Social Cohesion and Quality of Life
The submitted letter emphasizes that the initiative aims to strengthen equal opportunities, residential stability, and the overall quality of life for the citizens of Puerto del Rosario, forming a strategic policy of social cohesion and support for the most vulnerable families.
“Our commitment is clear: to work hand‑in‑hand with the regional government to guarantee that the right to housing becomes a reality for every resident of the municipality,” concluded Mayor David de Vera.
