Capital recycles 12,000 L of vegetable oil, beating the national average
“Throwing hazardous waste into the wrong container is an environmental crime,” warned the municipal Services Councillor. For the Puerto del Rosario City Council, this has been a standout year in environmental management.
A Remarkable Year for Vegetable‑Oil Collection
The City Council highlighted the results of “a great year in vegetable‑oil collection.” The Municipal Services Department released the annual breakdown for the period from August 2024 to August 2025, during which municipal services handled a total of 11,990 liters of vegetable oil.
This volume places Puerto del Rosario in the upper tier nationally and above the Canary Islands average for municipalities of similar size (45,000‑50,000 inhabitants).
“The Commitment of a Responsible Citizenry”
“Since the municipal government we have placed sustainability at the heart of our policies. Figures like the almost 12,000 kilograms of vegetable oil correctly recycled are not just numbers; they reflect the commitment of a responsible citizenry and a City Council that provides the tools for building, together, a cleaner and more nature‑friendly Puerto del Rosario. Every litre of recycled oil is a firm step toward the green city we want to leave as a legacy,”
— Mayor David de Vera
Councillor for Municipal Services David de León added:
“Efficient waste management is a priority. The notable increase in vegetable‑oil collection encourages us to double our efforts in awareness campaigns. We urge all neighbours to keep using the vegetable‑oil collection points, the orange containers, and especially the Risco Prieto Clean Point.”
“Improper Disposal Is an Environmental Crime”
Councillor de León emphasized:
“Putting hazardous waste into the wrong container is not a minor infraction; it is an environmental crime that harms the whole community. With the clean point in Risco Prieto open so widely and accessibly, there is no excuse for not recycling correctly.”
The City Council reminded residents that disposing of inappropriate waste in urban containers is prohibited and that, for hazardous waste, it can constitute an environmental offense subject to sanctions, as stated in a recent press release.
Sanctions and the Risco Prieto Clean Point
For proper handling, the municipality operates the Risco Prieto Clean Point at Aloe 37, managed by the Waste Department of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura de Fuerteventura. The facility is open to the public Monday‑Saturday 08:00‑18:00 and Sunday 09:00‑14:00.
At this site, citizens can dispose of all types of special waste free of charge and responsibly. In addition, Puerto del Rosario maintains roughly 30 orange containers spread throughout the municipality for the collection of domestic vegetable oil.
