CC offers unwavering support to Fernando Clavijo amid Hantavirus crisis
Nationalists Warn Their Relationship with the PSOE Is “At a Critical Point” and Will Analyse All Scenarios
Coalición Canaria (CC) demanded on Saturday that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez submit to a confidence vote and warned that its relationship with the PSOE is “at a critical point.” The party said it will analyse all possible scenarios before taking any decision based on how events unfold.
The party’s Secretary of Organisation, David Toledo, told the press that the national political council has authorised the executive to adopt any decision in the coming days after a series of “disrespect, marginalisation and lack of regard for the Canary Islands, its institutions and the regional government.”
“The gravity of what has happened obliges Coalición Canaria to analyse all scenarios and act with the responsibility required by the defence of the Canary Islands,” Toledo said, adding that the party will act according to the evolution of events and the State Government’s response.
Toledo stressed that CC will not look away from a State Government that “has crossed lines it should never have crossed.” The next few days, he warned, will be decisive to see whether the PSOE corrects its course or confirms that it has chosen a path of institutional contempt for the Canary Islands.
The national council also expressed unanimous support for the party’s leader and President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, praising his handling of the MV Hondius crisis – the cruise ship whose passengers were affected by hantavirus – and his “firm defence of the Canary Islands’ interests against a State Government marked by imposition and a lack of institutional loyalty.”
“Fernando Clavijo defended the Canary Islands while others bowed their heads,” Toledo added, noting that Clavijo acted responsibly, firmly, and with the democratic duty “to put the interests of this land above any political calculation of the State Government.”
CC has criticised the central executive for acting “with its eyes on how the world sees us, but not on the Canary Islands,” accusing it of trying to impose decisions on Canary institutions “without respect” for the regional government.
The nationalist bloc singled out Minister of Territorial Policy Ángel Víctor Torres for his role in the “marginalisation” of the islands, accusing him not only of allowing contempt but of actively participating in it.
In addition, the party warned that there is “tremendous concern” about recent developments related to the investigation of former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.
“We see a State with no general budget since 2022, no majority, decrees and laws that collapse on their own, and a political party that, instead of governing and improving people’s lives, is merely resisting.”
Consequently, CC believes it is more than necessary for Pedro Sánchez to call a confidence question “to find out whether there is still a legislature or not.” If not, the party argues, the government is “resisting instead of governing.”
When asked about CC’s stance in the Congress of Deputies, Toledo replied that Canary nationalists have always said they will support any decision that benefits the islands “out of institutional responsibility,” while stressing that “there has been a lack of respect from the PSOE toward CC that we will not forget.”
