CCOO denounces the collapse of postal service in Fuerteventura, demanding urgent measures
The trade union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) has today denounced a “unsustainable” collapse of the postal service on Fuerteventura, attributing the crisis to a chronic shortage of staff on the island and across the Canary Islands.
According to data supplied by the union, nearly 50 % of existing delivery positions are vacant. This shortfall is causing a daily buildup of thousands of parcels at centers in Puerto del Rosario, Antigua, Gran Tarajal, Corralejo and Morro Jable, leading to significant delays that affect both residents and local businesses.
CCOO also points out that the lack of hiring extends to covering sick leave and vacations, forcing the remaining workers to perform the duties of two people, which results in overload and a sharp decline in service efficiency.
The union’s complaint coincided with a meeting held today between union delegates and Lola García, president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, to discuss the seriousness of the situation. During the encounter, CCOO representatives expressed their “deep concern” over the marked deterioration in a service they deem “essential for the island’s social and economic cohesion.”
“It is unacceptable that the collapse in parcel handling is affecting our neighbours in this way,” the CCOO Correos statement reads.
The union demands that the postal company adopt urgent measures to restore normal operations, ensuring adequate staffing and implementing a contingency plan to prevent further collapse. It also warns that, without immediate changes, mobilisations will continue in defense of “a dignified, efficient and quality public service.”
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has indicated its willingness to cooperate in finding a structural solution that prevents the problem from recurring on the island.
