Child seriously injured after falling over seven meters in El Cot
He was airlifted after a complex rescue operation in a rocky area
In the late afternoon, around 19:50, a patrol of the La Oliva Local Police was alerted by a citizen while carrying out community‑safety duties in El Cotillo. The report indicated that a minor had fallen from a height exceeding seven metres in the area known as “El Muellito”.
Upon arrival, officers found that the incident occurred on a hard‑to‑reach cliffside, requiring urgent medical assistance. The first response team included:
- a resident doctor who was off‑duty,
- a municipal lifeguard also off‑duty,
- the local police officers, and
- the Emergency Coordinator of the La Oliva City Council.
These responders managed to stabilize the injured child until additional health resources arrived.
Through the communications centre, an alert was sent to 112 Canarias, which activated a broad emergency deployment. The Canary Islands Health Service dispatched a medicalised ambulance, municipal firefighters arrived on scene, and a rescue helicopter was mobilised.
After an initial on‑site assessment, the child was evacuated by air to the General Hospital of Fuerteventura for a more thorough evaluation.
Despite the seriousness of the accident and the challenging terrain, the youngster did not lose consciousness at any point. He was transported in a stable condition, although he sustained serious injuries.
