Citizens Party urges Canary PSOE to clarify airport co‑management and hints at Lucena’s possible replacement at Aena

David Toledo demands that they explain “whether they are with the Canary Islands and its Autonomy Statute or with Aena.”

After the meeting of the National Executive Committee (CEN), the nationalist coalition sent a direct message to the Canary PSOE, accusing the party of having abandoned the defence of the archipelago’s rights to “align with an entity that acts against the interests of the Canary Islands.”

“There is no longer room for ambiguities or complicit silences; the PSOE must say whether it stands on the side of the public interests of the Canary Islands and the compliance of the Statute, or on the side of Aena and those who want to keep deciding from Madrid about what belongs to this land,” said David Toledo, national secretary of Organisation of Coalición Canaria.

Toledo lamented that the Canary PSOE has chosen to question or minimise competencies that are clearly enshrined in the Autonomy Statute instead of promoting the development of a statutory framework that “had the backing of the Congress of Deputies and that today they minimise.”

He added that the most serious issue is the PSOE’s attitude of treating the defence of the Canary Islands as an excess while presenting obedience to Aena as an obligation, when what is at stake is respect for self‑government and a charter that forms part of the constitutional order.

For Coalición Canaria, it is unacceptable that the socialists side with those who aim to strip the Statute’s articles that recognise the Canary Islands’ participation in airport planning.

“We are not discussing a political whim; we are discussing whether the law is complied with, whether the self‑government of the Canary Islands is respected, and whether this land is defended or told to bow its head,” Toledo asserted.

“NO ONE CAN BE ABOVE THE STATUTE”

The nationalist leader warned that if the obstacle to enforcing the Autonomy Statute lies in the current leadership of Aena, decisive action must follow.

“If the stumbling block for the Canary Islands to see its rights recognised is the president of Aena, what must be promoted is his replacement. No one can be above the Autonomy Statute of the Canary Islands nor block the fulfilment of the Canary charter,” emphasized Toledo.

He also criticised the Canary PSOE’s stance, describing it as “an improper, unjustifiable and very serious ignorance of the Statute itself.” Coalición Canaria believes recent events oblige the PSOE to publicly retract.

“You cannot say you defend the Canary Islands while white‑washing Aena and questioning this land’s competencies,” Toledo pointed out.

In this context, CC reiterated that the defence of self‑government admits no timidity or subordination and warned it will continue demanding full compliance with the Statute in all matters related to airport management.
