Civil Guard charges attacker of C.B. Los Toscones in Corralejo
Brutal assault on a basketball referee in Corralejo: “You’re a son of a bitch.”
On Saturday, a violent attack was carried out against a Tenerife basketball referee by G.G., a player for C.B. Toscones Corralejo, a team from Fuerteventura.
During the third period of the 3ª FEB (formerly Liga EBA) match between Toscones Corralejo and Probasketlab Fuenlabrada, held at the José Perdomo Umpiérrez Pavilion in Corralejo, the local player committed a personal foul and then rammed the referee from behind. While the referee was down and defenseless, G.G. struck him again with a heavy stomp to the center of his chest.
After the referee managed to stand up about 20 seconds later, Gonzalo Guerra (the player’s full name) attempted a third assault, shouting “You’re a son of a bitch,” but was restrained by several teammates.
Spectator Involvement
A local spectator also invaded the court, shouting at the assaulted referee:
“I fuck your mother. You’re a pig; if I catch you I’ll finish you.”
The incident was reported by Canarias7.
Legal Action
The referee filed a complaint with the Civil Guard, alleging a possible crime of assault. He received medical attention at the emergency services of the Canary Health Service both on Saturday in Fuerteventura and on Sunday in Tenerife.
It is noteworthy that the aggressor is the son of the club’s technical secretary.
Reactions from Governing Bodies
Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB)
The FEB issued a statement on Sunday night condemning the assault:
“We strongly condemn the aggression suffered by one of the referees during the Third FEB match between Toscones and Fuenlabrada, held on Saturday in Fuerteventura. Throughout its history, the FEB has been opposed to any form of violence in sport, especially in basketball, which has always stood out for the values it promotes.”
The federation added that the case has been forwarded to the relevant disciplinary committees, which will judge the incident and impose appropriate sanctions.
Spanish Basketball Referees Association (AEBA)
AEBA also released a statement, offering support to the victim and encouraging him:
“We send our support to our colleague and wish him much courage. Sport must be a space of respect, education, and values. Violence has no place on a basketball court.”
Context
This is the third reported assault on basketball referees in the Canary Islands in recent years, following a violent episode involving a female referee in La Palma last season and an assault on a referee in Tenerife in 2021.
