Clavijo and Torres seal deal for Canary Islands to receive specific compensation amid

“Our community had been left out because we have an indirect tax system different from the rest of the state.”

The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, reached an agreement on Thursday for the archipelago to receive specific compensation from the Spanish State to address the effects of the war in the Middle East.

After a meeting held at the Canary Government headquarters in Madrid, Clavijo praised the “gesture” of the central government, noting that the anti‑crisis state decree “leaves a significant portion of the population without coverage.”

In a statement released by his administration, he announced that a compensation package will be provided to the Canary Government using resources from the Spanish Government to implement anti‑crisis measures in the islands.

Technical documents will be prepared over the weekend, and a meeting is scheduled for Monday in the archipelago to finalize the agreement.

“Dialogue, understanding, arguments, and the Canarian approach yield far more results than sterile confrontation and anger.”
