Clavijo urges on Constitution Day the urgent need to defend democratic values before they’re lost
“Only then can we move forward as a society within a framework of rights and freedoms that allows the cohesion of a diverse society.”
The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, emphasized this Saturday—Spain’s Constitution Day—that if we do not protect and promote the values championed by democracy, they will gradually disappear, making it “urgent” to defend them every day.
He reminded his followers on his official X account that “the Constitution is the pillar on which our democracy and coexistence in Spain have been built.”
“If we do not safeguard and foster the values it promotes, they will fade away; therefore, it is urgent to defend them daily, from an institutional and political standpoint.”
Clavijo added that only by doing so can we advance as a society within a framework of rights and freedoms that enables the cohesion of a diverse community.
