Coalition for General Election Galvanizes Canary Nationalism

Primero Canarias will propose a unified candidacy to all Canary‑loyal parties for the upcoming general elections.

A Call for Unified Action

The president of the Municipalists’ Managing Committee, Óscar Hernández, will advocate for a joint action among Canary‑loyal parties with the aim of presenting a single candidacy that robustly defends the interests of the Canary Islands in Madrid. The proposal will be formalized at the founding congress of Municipalists Primero Canarias, scheduled for 17‑18 October, with invitations extended to Coalición Canaria, Nueva Canarias, and the independent local parties from the eight islands.

Building a “Mesa de Unidad”

Municipalists Primero Canarias, a new political organization driven by mayors, public officials, and independent progressive nationalist leaders from Gran Canaria, will promote the creation of a Mesa de Unidad (Unity Table) to bring together all Canary‑loyal parties ahead of the forthcoming general elections. The primary goal of this initiative—without precluding future collaborative scenarios—is to assemble a unified candidacy capable of achieving the maximum possible representation in both the Congress of Deputies and the Senate, thereby defending the Canary Islands’ interests in Madrid with strength.

“Our aim is to forge a single front that can secure the highest possible seats for the Canary Islands in the national parliament,” Hernández said during the preparatory meetings.

Seeking Broad Support

For this initiative, Hernández expects to secure backing from the grassroots of Primero Canarias at the founding congress, which will take place at the Institución Ferial de Canarias (INFECAR) in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on 17‑18 October.

At the closing session of the congress, all Canary‑loyal political forces—including Coalición Canaria, Nueva Canarias, and the island and municipal parties—will be invited to hear the proposal of the Canary Unity Table directly from Hernández during his final plenary address.

Principles and Context

Since its inception in May, Primero Canarias has championed the principle of placing the interests of the Canary Islands and their people above any personal or partisan considerations. In the current climate of polarization and heightened confrontation across Spain, the proposed Mesa de Unidad will be presented as an open, plural movement that seeks to unite individuals from different islands and varied political sensibilities around the paramount goal of defending the Canary Islands.

The initiative aims to craft a program and candidacy for the general elections that transforms the diversity of thoughts and opinions into a genuine transformative force, convincing voters of the necessity to restore the Canary Islands’ influence in Madrid.

Strategic Significance

The Mesa de Unidad is also positioned as a strategic response to public fatigue and the dangerous rise of the far‑right, offering the electorate an alternative centered on defending the archipelago: a unity candidacy that highlights what unites Canary Islanders rather than what divides them.

The proposal will encourage cooperation around the common denominator shared by all Canary nationalism: above party leaders, above party symbols, and above any personal or partisan considerations, the priority must be the general interest of the Canary Islands and its people.
