Construction of cofferdams for the capital's pier dam begins in Las Palmas

Eight concrete boxes are being built and will be moored at the Port of La Luz before being transported to Fuerteventura.

The Port Authority of Las Palmas (APLP) has started manufacturing the eight floating boxes for the “Commercial Pier Dike” project in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura.

The new infrastructure will improve the overall protection of the port against the northern swells, increase its operational capacity, and provide a dedicated berth for unloading petroleum products, freeing the final section of the commercial pier for other uses.

“The first box, named ‘Virgen de la Peña’, is already constructed, and this weekend it will be launched and moored at the Port of Las Palmas, where it will stay until its transfer to Puerto del Rosario, where it will be anchored,” the APLP said.

The initial box measures 36.05 m in length, 19.55 m in width, and 15.90 m in height. It will be positioned on the future ro‑ro ramp, making it slightly smaller than the remaining seven boxes.

Once this box is completed, the formwork will be reconfigured to begin fabrication of the next seven boxes that will complete the dike.

Construction of the eight floating boxes proceeds around the clock, 24 hours a day, until the set is finished.

All boxes are rectangular reinforced‑concrete blocks, lightened internally with rectangular cells and equipped with a continuous footing at the bottom.
