Corralejo Carnival Takes Center Stage

March shines again with the Carnival of La Oliva municipality

Prepare silicone pistols, scissors, feathers and foam‑rubber. The Carnival of La Oliva municipality has officially kicked off. The Town Hall of La Oliva, through the Department of Festivities headed by Omaira Saavedra, announced today (26 February) the most anticipated weeks on the municipal calendar for locals and visitors alike – the Carnival.

From 5 to 15 March, the streets of the coastal town will be awash in light, colour and sparkle, with glitter, dance and endless parties celebrating the tradition and identity not only of Fuerteventura but of the entire Canary archipelago. Chosen by popular vote, the theme “Latin America” will frame a unique gathering for adults and children alike.

This year the official announcers will be Yeray Galván and Judith Morera, two people who live and breathe the Carnival from the inside, having performed both on the streets and on stage. Both have taken part in murga groups, comparsas and even served on the judging panel.

Highlights and Events

  • Adult Queen & Children’s Kingdom elections
  • Gala of the Grand Lady
  • Murga Marathon
  • Carnival Parade (Coso Carnavalero)
  • Carnival Race – now in its 9th consecutive year
  • Heels Race – celebrating its 2nd edition
  • Carnival of the Tie (Carnaval de La Corbata) in La Oliva
  • Second Carnival Walk in the Plaza de la Iglesia at 18:00
  • Evening verbenas featuring Nuevo Klan, Nklave, K‑Libre and Kandela at the Cultural Association Raíz del Pueblo from 21:00

The municipal carnival groups were present for the selection of the running order of the 17 candidates for queens and ladies, culminating in a performance by local artist Marta Umpiérrez, who sang the Carnival anthem “Es Marzo” at full volume.

“Another year brings very special dates for our municipality and, especially, for the town of Corralejo. Our goal remains the same: to organise a carnival that preserves our tradition and identity with the help of the protagonists of these festivities – the carnival groups,” said Isaí Blanco, mayor of La Oliva.

“We invite you to enjoy the festivities from 5 to 15 March, which demonstrate that our carnival is tradition,” Blanco added.

“I want to thank the carnival groups deeply for their effort and dedication in keeping our carnival alive. I will never tire of saying it: without the groups there would be no carnival,” emphasized Omaira Saavedra, councilor for Festivities.

Now it’s time to prepare your costumes – the Carnival in the municipality of La Oliva is about to begin!
