Corralejo pier project slips further out of reach this term
The Canary Islands Government’s Minister of Public Works, Housing and Mobility, Pablo Rodríguez, appeared before a parliamentary committee to detail the actions carried out and planned for port infrastructure on the island of Fuerteventura.
During his speech, the minister said:
“Canary Ports has regained its momentum in Fuerteventura after too long without significant actions or public investment, to address the historic debt in this area with the island.”
He highlighted that the ports of Corralejo, Gran Tarajal and Morro Jable are currently undergoing modernization, energy‑efficiency upgrades, and early‑stage planning, all under the supervision and drive of the island’s public‑entity director over the past two years.
What repeatedly resurfaced in the discussion, and prompted questions from other deputies, was the long‑awaited expansion of the Corralejo dock—a project stalled at a port that has been visibly outdated for more than two decades.
Rodríguez explained that several technical assistance firms have been commissioned to plan the future of the facility, including:
- The design of a new protective breakwater
- New ticket‑selling kiosks
- Re‑ordering of the waterfront promenade with added restrooms and showers for users
The department is currently liaising with the General Directorate of Biodiversity, Forests and Desertification of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge to ensure the project aligns with environmental standards. Once a favorable report is obtained, an Environmental Impact Declaration will be requested to guarantee that the development does not harm the natural environment.
LED Lights and Fencing
In this context, the minister noted that Corralejo—“one of the locations with the highest maritime traffic in the archipelago”—has undergone a comprehensive renewal aimed at improving safety and user experience. Key actions include:
- Renewal of the security fencing
- Complete refurbishment of passenger‑terminal restrooms
- Upgrade of promenade lighting with low‑consumption luminaires
- Installation of LED projectors on the boat slip, reducing energy consumption by 75 %
The most significant work underway is the general conditioning of the port, with a budget of €726,621. This project covers paving, sanitation improvements, security fencing, a new water tank, and the renovation of structural elements.
