Council Urges Heightened Vigilance Against Phylloxera and Invites an Informative Talk

Fuerteventura will host an informational session on the detection and prevention of grapevine phylloxera. The event is scheduled for 22 September at 17:30 in the Palace of Training and Congresses.

Details of the Meeting

The Government of the Canary Islands, in collaboration with the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, will hold a briefing aimed at the island’s viticultural sector. It will take place on Monday, 22 September, at 17:30 in Room B of the Palace of Training and Congresses. The session will feature an address by the Vice‑Councillor for the Primary Sector, Eduardo García Cabello.

Why the Alert?

At the end of July, the Canary Islands Government and the Cabildo of Tenerife detected outbreaks of grapevine phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifoliae) on the island of Tenerife. Although no cases have been found in Fuerteventura so far, authorities stress the need for heightened surveillance as a preventive measure to ensure a rapid response should the protocol need to be activated.

How to Report Suspected Incidents

Growers who notice possible symptoms should contact the Unit of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Cabildo in Puerto del Rosario:

Reports can also be made to the Agency of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries in Gran Tarajal:

Recommendations for Viticulturists

  • Inspect vineyards closely for signs such as galls or nodules on roots, lesions or swellings on leaves, and overall plant weakening.
  • Report any suspicious signs immediately, even if the diagnosis is not yet confirmed.
  • Do not move tools, soil, or plant material between plots, as these actions can easily spread the pest.

By following these guidelines, the island’s wine producers can help prevent the introduction and spread of phylloxera and protect Fuerteventura’s viticultural heritage.
