.Crews carry out preventive flood clearing between Madre del Agua and Ajuy

The crews of the “Fuerteventura, bonita por naturaleza” program, promoted by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, have begun new pruning, clearing and preventive cleaning works in the Malpaso ravine, located in the municipality of Pájara. This action continues the work carried out in various basins of the municipality of Betancuria, with the aim of preventing floods caused by the accumulation of obstacles in watercourses.
The works focus on the stretch of the ravine that runs between Madre del Agua and its mouth at Ajuy, covering roughly 2,100 linear metres. According to the Cabildo’s president, Lola García, these actions “improve the safety and drainage conditions of the watercourses as a preventive measure during the rainy season, while also contributing to the beautification of the natural environment.”
“They guarantee that when heavy rains or intense run‑off occur, the water follows its natural path without causing floods on roads, infrastructure, farms or homes,” said Blas Acosta, Councillor for Works and Machinery. He added that this is “a constant year‑round effort, often invisible, but crucial for the common good when the ravines flow again.”
The interventions are carried out through the Cabildo’s own management system, Gesplan, as part of the Works and Machinery Department’s policy aimed at both conserving natural environments—by removing waste—and preventing risks through strategic pruning and clearing of watercourses.
With these measures, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura continues to strengthen its territorial maintenance and natural‑risk prevention strategy, acting proactively to mitigate the impact of intense rainfall episodes across different areas of the island.
