David de Vera: “Marlape PSOE’s statement is a total betrayal; we demand a pact‑monitoring meeting”
The future of the Marlape urbanisation in Playa Blanca has sparked the first public clash between coalition partners in the Puerto del Rosario government.
The mayor of the capital municipality, David de Vera, told La Voz de Fuerteventura on Radio Insular several weeks ago that the council already possessed the final resolution ordering the demolition of the Marlape development within a maximum period of three months. He added that the corporation intended to carry out the demolition if Sareb, the property owner, failed to comply.
A few days later, the councilor for Urban Planning, Ana Hernández, highlighted on the same programme that the urban‑discipline and legal‑regularisation file had been processed with technical and legal rigor, insisting that “the politician’s responsibility is to ensure compliance with urban‑planning regulations.”
The councilor expressed hope that Sareb would act and also left the door open to potential investors to avoid the total demolition of more than eighty affected properties. She stressed that these buildings have no housing guarantee because they are unfinished, and that, in many cases, squatters residing there have carried out unauthorised alterations. Hernández appeared later in the plenary session to explain the procedural details to other political forces.
Now, the Executive Committee of the PSOE in Puerto del Rosario has issued a statement titled “The PSOE of Puerto del Rosario insists: ‘Another route was possible’ for Marlape.” The socialists acknowledge in the document the need to “restore urban‑planning legality and guarantee the safety of the environment,” but argue that the process“could have been handled with better planning, dialogue, and social sensitivity.”**
The communiqué was received as a cold splash of water by the nationalist councilors, as the mayor admitted in remarks to La Voz de Fuerteventura.
“The statement, made public after the councilor’s appearance in the plenary, constitutes an absolute betrayal by the PSOE,” David de Vera said, demanding that the pact‑monitoring board be convened.
