Delcy Rodríguez to serve as president until 2031

Delcy Rodríguez, until now the Vice President of Venezuela, has been sworn in as the new President of the country in the National Assembly, replacing Nicolás Maduro, who was captured by the United States and is to be tried in a New York court on charges of trafficking, weapons possession and narcoterrorism.

According to Cadena Ser, Rodríguez has taken office for a five‑year term that will run until 2031. The Assembly therefore inaugurated the 2026‑2031 legislative period in a session marked by uncertainty following Maduro’s arrest and the oath‑taking of Delcy Rodríguez as President.

“I come with pain for the suffering inflicted on the Venezuelan people after an illegitimate military aggression against our homeland. I come with pain for the kidnapping of two heroes we have as hostages in the United States, President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores,” Rodríguez declared in the Assembly.

“I also come with honor to swear,” she continued, taking her oath by invoking Simón Bolívar, Hugo Chávez, Jorge Antonio Rodríguez and the children of Venezuela. “To guarantee a future for our children,” she added before swearing by her family.
