Dies as car plunges amid Famara hazard
The driver, a young man of about 25 years old, died after leaving the road and falling into a hard‑to‑reach ravine.
A tragic accident occurred this week in the area of the Ermita de Las Nieves, in the municipality of Teguise, when a vehicle plunged down a slope toward the La Poceta ravine.
Emergency teams were alerted through the 1‑1‑2 emergency line. Upon arrival, they found the car in a steep, poorly visible spot due to adverse weather conditions. Near the vehicle lay the lifeless body of a man estimated to be around 25 years old, who appears to have been ejected from the car during the crash.
Units from the Lanzarote Safety and Emergency Consortium, the Teguise Local Police, and the Civil Guard rushed to the scene. Because of the difficult terrain, the extraction of the body required the intervention of a helicopter from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES).
Firefighters also secured the unstable vehicle, manually moving it to a safer location to prevent danger to hikers. After obtaining a judicial order, the deceased was air‑lifted to the airport for subsequent transfer to the appropriate authorities.
The Civil Guard has opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
