Drago Canarias suspects the Technology Park could become a military base

Drago Canarias in Fuerteventura says that, while they are not opposed to progress, they want to know how the money allocated to projects in the Fuerteventura Technological Park is being managed.

They demand greater transparency from both the Government of the Canary Islands and the Government of Spain regarding the objectives and activities of the “stratopuerto” – essentially an airport for unmanned aircraft – located in the Technological Park of Fuerteventura, in the municipality of Puerto del Rosario.

“This expenditure is worrying if it is not clearly explained to citizens what the stratopuerto is for and what benefits it will bring to the residents of Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura, and the Canary Islands as a whole,” said Aceysele Chacón, spokesperson for Drago Canarias in Fuerteventura.

International involvement

According to data from the Spanish Government’s procurement platform, a number of foreign entities are currently operating at the Fuerteventura stratopuerto, including the United States, Abu Dabi, Germany, Ireland, Turkey, Italy and France.

Chacón added:

“In a wartime context and with the current international instability, the strategic geographic location of the Canary Islands makes the activity of a stratopuerto that launches drones into the stratosphere for surveillance even more concerning.”

She warned that there is a risk of the territory being used as a military base, exploiting its remote position away from the Iberian Peninsula and mainland Europe.

Commitment to research and diversification

Drago Canarias also stresses that they will always defend investment in research and new technologies as a way to diversify the Canary Islands’ economy, emphasizing that such infrastructure should positively impact the well‑being of island residents and promote learning and autonomy for the region.
