Ecological Transition and Cabildo team up with Fuerteventura towns to roll out biowaste, backed by the Zurita Environmental Complex

The General Directorate of Ecological Transition of the Canary Islands Government and the Cabildo of Fuerteventura held a working meeting with councilors responsible for waste management in the island’s municipalities. The aim was to strengthen institutional coordination and advance the rollout of separate biowaste collection.

The meeting, convened at the island’s Cabildo at the request of the Directorate, was attended by Cabildo president Lola García, the island’s Waste Counselor Enrique Pérez, and the Director General of Ecological Transition Ángel Montañés. Participants presented progress on the actions planned for the Zurita Environmental Complex, as well as execution timelines and the schedule for commissioning the new facilities.

A dialogue session was also opened with the municipalities to discuss the main challenges local administrations face in implementing biowaste collection before the end of 2026, as stipulated by the Canary Islands Circular Economy Action Plan (PAEC) 2024‑2026.

“This meeting is key to aligning all administrations and ensuring that the investments being made have a real impact on the ground,” emphasized Ángel Montañés.
“The Zurita operation is a fundamental piece for Fuerteventura to make a qualitative leap in waste management and meet the circular‑economy targets set for the coming years.”

Montañés added that the Canary Islands Government’s commitment is clear and decisive: biowaste must be removed from the mixed‑waste bin in every archipelago municipality starting next year. “We are talking about roughly 40 % of the waste that currently ends up in landfill and that can and should be recovered,” he said.

Cabildo president Lola García highlighted the island corporation’s commitment to improving waste treatment and stressed the importance of inter‑administrative coordination to introduce advances such as the “fifth bin,” which will enhance biowaste recycling and reduce its environmental impact.

Zurita: Key Infrastructure for Waste Management in Fuerteventura

The Zurita Environmental Complex, located in Puerto del Rosario, is the island’s primary waste‑management facility and a strategic component of the Canary Islands Circular Economy Action Plan. Its upgrade will decisively advance separate organic‑matter collection and reduce landfill disposal.

The historically demanded project involves a total investment of €17 million and includes the commissioning of a sorting plant and a composting plant. These installations will valorise waste and cut cell‑landfill inputs by up to 10 %, contributing to the recycling and circular‑economy goals set for 2026.

All involved administrations stress that coordination among the Canary Islands Government, the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and the municipalities will be essential for these infrastructures to translate into a tangible improvement of the waste‑management system and a step toward a more sustainable model for the island.
