Education awards contract for new El Cotillo primary school
The action will advance the construction of a centre with thirteen units and specific spaces to serve students with educational needs in the area.
The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports, led by Poli Suárez, has awarded the contract for drafting the project of the new Early Childhood and Primary Education Centre (CEIP) in El Cotillo, La Oliva municipality, Fuerteventura. This step moves forward the future construction of an educational facility “demanded for years by the northern island’s school community.”
The contract, valued at more than €110,000 and with a four‑month deadline, aims to define the project of the future school, designed to respond to the population and school‑age growth the area has experienced in recent years. The centre will comprise thirteen educational units—one first‑cycle infant class, three second‑cycle classes and nine primary‑level classes—plus a dedicated space for students with specific educational support needs, the ministry explained in a statement.
The new infrastructure will replace the current modular classrooms, providing the town with a modern, accessible school adapted to today’s pedagogical requirements, with educational spaces suited to new learning methodologies and improved conditions for the whole school community.
“With this award we continue advancing a project long awaited by the families of El Cotillo and by the entire school community, which for years has called for facilities that match the growth of this northern part of Fuerteventura,” said Iván G. Carro, Director General of Infrastructure and Equipment.
“The drafting phase will allow us to define a modern, accessible centre that will replace the provisional facilities and offer students more suitable spaces for learning and coexistence,” Carro added.
Infrastructure Plan
The work on CEIP El Cotillo is part of the Strategic Plan for Educational Infrastructure 2024‑2035 promoted by the ministry, which foresees around fifty projects across the archipelago with a total investment of €235 million. For Fuerteventura, the plan includes several initiatives aimed at modernising and expanding the public school network, adapting facilities to the island’s demographic evolution and improving teaching and learning conditions.
Key island projects include the completed conversion of CEIP El Ciervo into the Integrated Vocational Training Centre (CIFP) Morro Jable, as well as the expansion of the CEIPs Tarajalejo, Francisco Navarro Artiles, Gran Tarajal, and the CIFP Majada Marcial.
