Education Department launches tender for new primary school in El Cotillo

Project Overview

The Government of the Canary Islands’ Department of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports announced a tender for the design project of the new Centro de Educación Infantil y Primaria (CEIP) in El Cotillo, La Oliva.

  • Base budget: €136,497
  • Execution period: 4 months
  • Scope: Preparation of the basic and execution project for the future school, which will comprise 13 units – one early‑childhood cycle, three second‑cycle units and nine primary‑school units – plus a dedicated space for students with special educational needs (NEAE).
  • The contract also includes a geotechnical study and the completion of the topographic survey of the parcel where the building will be erected.

Official Statement

“This tender represents another step in the department’s commitment to the families and the educational community of El Cotillo, who have been demanding a new school with better facilities and sufficient capacity to meet the area’s population growth for years,” said Poli Suárez, Councillor for Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports.

He added that the new centre will provide “modern, accessible and sustainable spaces, with classrooms adapted to new methodologies and a school environment that matches the current needs of the students of Fuerteventura.”

Strategic Context

The new CEIP in El Cotillo is part of the Strategic Plan for Educational Infrastructure 2024‑2035, a €235 million initiative that foresees around fifty projects across the archipelago.

In Fuerteventura, the plan includes eight major projects, such as:

  • Completion of the conversion of CEIP El Ciervo into the Integrated Vocational Training Centre (CIFP) Morro Jable.
  • Expansion of the CEIPs Tarajalejo, Francisco Navarro Artiles, and Gran Tarajal.
  • Expansion of the CIFP Majada Marcial.

Expected Benefits

The future school will belong to a new generation of educational centres designed with sustainability, accessibility, and climatic comfort in mind. Its construction will:

  • Replace the current modular classrooms.
  • Provide the community with its own facilities, including shaded areas, a library, specialized classrooms, a school garden, and sports zones.
