Education leaves Pájara hanging at Costa Calma CEO meeting

The Pájara City Council has formally requested that the Canary Islands Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports urgently reschedule the meeting that was supposed to address the land transfer for the construction of a new Centro de Enseñanza Obligatoria (CEO) in Costa Calma.

The meeting had been set for Wednesday, 6 May, at the municipal technical office. According to an official municipal note, the regional education officials did not show up.

“Although the meeting had been confirmed by both parties a month ago via e‑mail, they neither appeared at the venue nor at the agreed time,” the council’s statement read.

The council stresses that the new school is essential to avoid the displacement of Costa Calma students to Gran Tarajal. It urges the ministry, headed by Minister Poli Suárez (PP), to:

  • Confirm a new date for the meeting as soon as possible.
  • Provide details on the proposed project, the implementation plan, and the timelines the ministry is handling.

While the statement did not include comments from the mayor or the governing coalition councilors (CC‑PSOE), it highlighted the importance of the facility for southern Fuerteventura, noting that it would “respond to the demand and request of local residents.”

The municipality now awaits a revised appointment from the Education Ministry to move forward with the land cession and the construction of the much‑needed school.
