Empty Classrooms in Fuerteventura as Students Overwhelmingly Back the Palestine Strike

“Stop the genocide against the Palestinian people. Break with Israel now.” This is the appeal issued nationwide by the Student Union, which has a strong presence in Fuerteventura.

“There are practically empty classrooms, with attendance close to one hundred percent,” said island education director Yurena Pérez early this morning.

The strike is aimed at students from the third year of compulsory secondary education onward and has had a significant impact on Fuerteventura. In the early hours, Director Pérez reported that many classrooms were virtually empty, indicating near‑total participation. While official figures are still pending, later in the day it became clear that the majority of Majorero students have indeed backed the protest.

Demonstrations have been scheduled across numerous autonomous communities for 12:00 p.m., including in the Canary Islands—both in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Fuerteventura will also join the protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza with a rally planned for Saturday, 4 October, starting at 6:00 p.m. on the capital’s main esplanade.

A new citizen mobilization, organized by various social groups, aims to denounce the situation while the world watches the “Global Sumud” flotilla’s attempt to open a humanitarian corridor to Gaza, even as Israeli forces intercept the vessels.
