Fuerte por Naturaleza Begins Sustainable Landscape Rehabilitation in Valle Grande

This intervention arises at the proposal of the Tourism Department and is supported by the Next Generation EU funds.

The ‘Fuerte por Naturaleza’ program of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Tourism Department, is moving forward with a new line of action: the sustainable rehabilitation of the Protected Natural Landscape of Valle Grande in the municipality of La Oliva, backed by Next Generation EU funding.

“Both actions are part of the island corporation’s line of work to protect our territory and our landscape. They are measures to recover the original state of the agricultural landscape of the area and the traditional farming systems such as the gavias, elements that are part of Fuerteventura’s identity and are essential for water use,” said Lola García, President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura.

“We must strengthen what is already a great asset for Fuerteventura and part of our identity heritage: its unique landscapes,” explained Marlene Figueroa, Councillor for Tourism.

“In the municipality of La Oliva we have several very important examples that define us as Majoreros and also project us with a certain way of being and feeling in the eyes of the visitor,” Figueroa added.

The sustainable rehabilitation of the Valle Grande Protected Natural Landscape is included in the ‘Fuerte por Naturaleza’ program of the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan. It has a budget of more than €255,000 within the framework of Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan financed by the European Union (Next Generation EU).

The work is being carried out through a contract awarded by the Cabildo to its own Territorial and Environmental Management and Planning unit (Gesplan). It will cover an area of almost 277,000 m² comprising 36 parcels.

The main objective is to preserve and improve Valle Grande’s natural environment using traditional landscape‑restoration techniques, focusing on the rehabilitation of stone walls and traditional agricultural systems such as the gavias—key elements of the landscape and rural identity of Fuerteventura. These interventions will also help conserve natural heritage, restore conditions that enhance water retention, and maintain local biodiversity.

Planned actions include:

  • Cleaning and repairing stone walls.
  • Restoring gavias to capture rainwater.
  • Recovering the landscape through sustainable techniques.
  • Removing elements that are foreign to the natural environment.
