Fuerteventura activates the PEIN this Thursday at 3 p.m.

The decision includes “suspending all outdoor activities organized by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura” and “closing all sports facilities, covered or not.”

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has activated the Island Emergency Plan (PEIN) in a pre‑emergency phase and alert status from 15:00 h on Thursday, 19 March, due to the impact of Storm Therese and the worsening weather conditions on the island. The decision follows statements issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government, based on AEMET forecasts and other available sources.

The decree outlines a multiple‑risk scenario across the archipelago. Specifically, the pre‑alert for floods in the Canary Islands remains in force, a coastal‑phenomena alert covers the entire autonomous community, and the warning has been upgraded to “ALERT for RAIN.” In addition, Fuerteventura stays under a pre‑alert for winds and storms within the framework of the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).

In this context, the Cabildo Presidency, acting as the PEIN authority, resolves to “ACTIVATE the Island Emergency Plan of Fuerteventura (PEIN) in a PRE‑EMERGENCY phase under ALERT status.”

Among the measures adopted, the decree states that, “in view of the declarations of risk from adverse meteorological phenomena (coastal events, winds, rain and storms),” precautions must be heightened and it is agreed to “suspend all outdoor activities organized by the Cabildo of Fuerteventura,” as well as “close all sports facilities, covered or not.”

All other services will continue their scheduled activities.

Francisco Javier Torres Sánchez, the Cabildo’s Head of Security and Emergencies, is appointed technical director of the emergency. He is ordered to “mobilize the necessary means and resources of the Island Council of Fuerteventura,” under the coordination of the Ministry of Security and Emergencies and in communication with the CECOES 1‑1‑2 emergency network.

The document also calls for the implementation of “all necessary measures to remedy the event” and for its communication to the various administrations and bodies involved, including municipal councils, the Civil Guard and the Port Authority.

The activation of PEIN occurs amid atmospheric instability linked to Storm Therese, which will bring a period of heavy rain, strong winds and adverse coastal phenomena to Fuerteventura, requiring reinforced prevention and coordination of all emergency resources on the island.
