Fuerteventura braces for a heat and dust haze episode with temperatures possibly topping 32°C

Fuerteventura faces a heat and dust episode this weekend, with temperatures that could surpass 32 °C at various points on the island, especially in the interior and southern Majorero areas, according to forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

The arrival of a warm air mass from the Sahara will also bring suspended dust, affecting particularly the eastern islands of the archipelago, including Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

Weather models indicate that the highest temperatures may be recorded between Saturday and Sunday, reaching values close to 34 °C in some interior zones of Fuerteventura. AEMET also predicts a very dry environment, clear skies and moderate dust, especially in mid‑altitudes and areas exposed to east and southeast winds.

This shift marks a stark contrast to recent weeks, which were characterized by mild temperatures and greater cloud cover. Experts note that the Canary Islands could be entering one of the first intense heat episodes of the year, with records more typical of late summer.

In Fuerteventura, the combination of heat and dust particularly affects the elderly, children and people with respiratory problems. Health authorities therefore recommend avoiding intense physical effort during the midday hours, staying well hydrated and limiting prolonged exposure to the outdoors.

The forecast suggests the episode could last several days before temperatures gradually return to more typical values for this time of year.
