Fuerteventura Council Christens First Latin Sailing School Ship

The vessel, five metres long, is named ISLA DE FUERTEVENTURA

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Sports Department headed by Luis González, has taken a new step in preserving and promoting its sporting traditions with the christening of the first Latin‑style sailing school boat.

The pioneering project is financed by the Island Corporation under an agreement with the Island Federation of Latin Sailing, the body responsible for the boat’s management and maintenance.

The vessel, christened ISLA DE FUERTEVENTURA, measures five metres in length and was handcrafted by carpenter Santiago González, with its aesthetic design created by artist Silvestre Chacón.

The initiative serves both educational and competitive purposes, in line with the Canary Law on Physical Activity and Sport, which gives priority to the promotion of traditional sports, native games, and nautical disciplines.

  • Educational role: the boat will be used to provide training and bring Latin sailing to schools across the island, with sessions delivered by qualified instructors.
  • Competitive role: it will give new crews access to island‑wide competitions. For this inaugural season, the Club de Regatas Islas del Viento presented ISLA DE FUERTEVENTURA at the opening round of the Cabildo’s Latin Sailing League in Fuerteventura, following the official christening ceremony.

“In the last two years we have doubled our efforts from the Sports Department to support Latin sailing. Today we see the fruits of that shared work: more boats, more crews, higher participation and, above all, a brighter future for this sport that is truly ours,” said island president Lola García.

“With this act we take another step toward preserving our roots, which also serves as a key tool to ensure generational renewal and bring young people closer to a tradition that is part of our island identity,” added Sports Councillor LuisGonzález.

Over the past two years, the Cabildo, through its Sports Department, has significantly increased its support for Latin sailing, enabling—via the Island Federation—a solid training programme and an ever‑richer calendar of island competitions.
