Fuerteventura Council Delimits and Protects Gran Tarajal Marsh
The “Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature” crews have begun installing more than 400 wooden posts
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through its own Territorial and Environmental Management and Planning department (Gesplan), has started installing a fence that will mark the perimeter of the Gran Tarajal marsh. This action is part of the “Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature” programme promoted by the Cabildo, which, according to island president Lola García, “includes measures to conserve the natural and heritage resources of our island and is carried out in every corner of the island.”
“In this case, we are safeguarding an important natural element: the Gran Tarajal marshes.”
Blas Acosta, Councillor for Works and Machinery, explains that “these small actions help organize the flow of people and vehicles to preserve the natural heritage without hindering human activity.”
The work consists of marking a 615‑metre linear perimeter with more than 400 wooden posts, each just under one metre high. The intervention aims to manage the designated area to protect the natural environment of the Gran Tarajal marshes and to channel the movement of pedestrians and vehicles in the zone.
Work began this week with the drilling of holes using a backhoe, after which the posts will be set into place to delineate the marsh boundaries.
The “Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature” project, overseen by Blas Acosta’s department and implemented by Gesplan, envisions actions over a 15‑month period, with a self‑financed investment of four million euros covering roughly one hundred “proximity actions” that directly impact the conservation of the natural environment, improve visitors’ perception, and enhance residents’ quality of life.
