Fuerteventura Council Guarantees Sports Events Align with Land Conservation

The Environment and Hunting Department of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura has confirmed that sporting activities on the island—ranging from motor‑vehicle competitions and cycling races to foot‑races—are compatible with environmental conservation.

“Each event is not only a sporting competition, but also an opportunity to show that it is possible to enjoy the territory while respecting and protecting its natural wealth,” the island corporation said in an official statement.

So far this year, the department has processed 27 dossiers related to various sports events.

To authorize these activities, technical reports are prepared in accordance with current regulations. The reports:

  • Verify the feasibility of the routes.
  • Assess potential impacts on flora, fauna, and protected areas.
  • Define measures that ensure the harmony between sport and conservation.

Key measures include:

  • Protecting species during breeding periods.
  • Regulating speed on sensitive sections.
  • Controlling noise in areas of natural value.
  • Properly signposting routes.
  • Managing and removing waste during and after the events.

A maintenance plan is also required to restore any deteriorated sections, always under the supervision of environmental agents.

Although minor incidents have occasionally been recorded, the Cabildo emphasizes that continuous monitoring and improvement mechanisms reinforce the commitment of organizers and participants each year.
