Fuerteventura Council Launches Restoration of Morro Velosa Lookout

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has launched repair and adaptation works on the Morro Velosa viewpoint, aiming to reopen this emblematic space to the public before the end of 2026.

The island’s president, Lola García, together with the tourism councilor Marlene Figueroa, the Fuerteventura councilor Rayco León, and the mayor of Betancuria, Enrique Cerdeña, visited the site this week to mark the start of the works.

With an investment of over one million euros, the works are being carried out by Ecología y Construcción Fesumar S.L. and form part of the Destination Tourist Sustainability Plan (PSTD) “Fuerte by Nature,” financed with European NextGeneration funds from the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.

A Comprehensive Renovation for a Key Space

The Morro Velosa viewpoint, designed more than 25 years ago and slated to host the future Arid Zones Interpretation Center, shows deficiencies caused by age. The project includes a full‑scale renovation that covers:

  • Repair of pavements, roofing, cladding, and carpentry.
  • Adaptation of the entrance porch and improvements in accessibility.
  • Expansion of the café and creation of a terrace.
  • Redesign of the interior layout to make the space more functional and attractive.

Institutional Statements

“These works will allow us to recover and modernize a space of great value for residents and visitors, offering one of the best views of the vastness of our arid zones,” said island president Lola García.

Councilor of Heritage Rayco León emphasized that the project fits within the island’s museum‑space renewal process, driven by Museums of Fuerteventura.

Tourism councilor Marlene Figueroa highlighted that the PSTD “Fuerte by Nature” seeks to strengthen the island’s tourism competitiveness with modern, accessible, and sustainable facilities, in coordination with the municipalities.
