Fuerteventura Council renews agreement to keep multidisciplinary disability assessment team
The plenary session of the Cabildo voted unanimously on Monday to renew the agreement with the Government of the Canary Islands for managing the recognition of disability degrees in Fuerteventura. Under this renewed pact, the island will continue to rely on a permanent multidisciplinary team that prepares the psychological and social reports forming the basis for disability certification.
“This agreement allows us to streamline the assessment procedures for people with disabilities, easing waiting lists for a priority service that contributes to people’s well‑being,” said island president Lola García.
According to the Counselor for Social Action, Víctor Alonso, the renewed contract speeds up the service by improving the timelines for medical assessments. The multidisciplinary team, coordinated among the Cabildo, the Canary Islands Health Service, and the Directorate General of Disability, includes:
- a psychologist
- two social workers
- a physician
- a nurse
- an administrative officer
- an occupational therapist
The island corporation also provides the facilities needed for the team’s work.
In November 2025, more than 3,800 people in Fuerteventura were registered with some degree of disability.
“Thanks to this agreement, 516 assessments were carried out in 2024 and we will reach 710 in 2025, so we have been solving an important problem for the island,” explained Counselor Víctor Alonso.
