Fuerteventura Council to Repair Over 1,000 Irrigation Channels and Farming Systems in 2025

The work carried out by the island’s agricultural tractors enables water retention during rainy periods, such as the recent passage of Storm Emilia.

The Cabildo’s agricultural tractors have repaired more than a thousand gavias and elements of Fuerteventura’s traditional farming landscape throughout 2025, thanks to the coordination and effort of the Works and Machinery Service. These tractors provide support to municipalities and private owners of gavias, whether by fixing collapses or preparing the ground for cultivation.

In total, over 4,500 hours of work have been logged, a figure that becomes evident during rainy spells like the recent passage of Storm Emilia, which left countless gavias full across the island, allowing the agricultural sector to harness this water resource.

“It is essential to strengthen these activities to fine‑tune traditional cultivation systems, which are vital for agricultural professionals, water use, and as an identity element of the Majorero landscape,” said Cabildo President Lola García.
“We are seeing a positive balance in our work plan, with more than a thousand interventions that will continue across the entire island,” García added.

Works and Machinery Councillor Blas Acosta explained that the plan covers actions in all municipalities, carried out at the request of local councils and residents, keeping gavias and traditional cultivation systems in perfect condition and preserving the distinctive character of the Majorero landscape.

“These structures facilitate nutrient retention and protect fertile soils that would otherwise be lost downstream through runoff, while also holding water for infiltration into the aquifers,” Acosta noted.
