Fuerteventura General Hospital Nears Double Hemodynamic Cardiology Cases in 2025, Over 1,000 Procedures

The Hemodynamics Unit of the Hospital General of Fuerteventura, attached to the Canary Islands Health Department, closed 2025 with a remarkable increase in clinical activity, reaching a total of 1,011 procedures compared with 544 performed in 2024 – an 85.8% rise.

This growth is linked to the expansion of the service portfolio, the incorporation of new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, and the strengthening of the professional team, all aimed at improving cardiac care on the island and reducing referrals to other hospitals.

New Techniques and Procedure Growth

  • Introduction of coronary functional assessment using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and invasive evaluation of functional reserve and ischemia through intracoronary pressure wires.
  • Cardiac pacing procedures saw a dramatic surge: implantations of physiologically‑stimulated pacemakers and implantable cardioverter‑defibrillators (ICDs) rose from 41 in 2024 to 97 in 2025, a 136.6% increase.
  • Over 150 activations of the Code Infarction (CODICAN) were recorded, cementing the unit as a key resource for urgent acute coronary syndrome care.
  • 69 PICC catheters were placed for prolonged treatments such as chemotherapy, antibiotic therapy, parenteral nutrition, and central venous pressure monitoring.

The unit also expanded its diagnostic arsenal with Holter monitoring, transthoracic echocardiography, and pharmacological tests for arrhythmia study, enhancing both diagnostic capacity and comprehensive patient follow‑up.

Patient Profile

  • 68.4% of procedures were performed on men and 31.6% on women, reflecting the typical prevalence of cardiovascular disease in this setting.
  • Nearly half of the interventions involved patients aged 60–74, with the 65–69 age group representing the largest share (15.5% of total procedures).
  • Patients 75–79 years old accounted for 13%, while those over 80 comprised 11.7%, highlighting the unit’s crucial role in serving an increasingly elderly population.

A Strategic Unit for the Island

Inaugurated in November 2023, the Hemodynamics Unit occupies more than 400 m² and required an equipment investment of €610,663. After just over two years of operation, its evolution marks a qualitative leap in Fuerteventura’s healthcare, allowing the majority of cardiac interventions to be performed locally and eliminating the need for transfers to the reference hospital in Gran Canaria.
