Fuerteventura Gets Pretty for La Peña

Teams Prepare the Natural Settings of Betancuria to Celebrate La Peña with Safety and Splendor

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through its Works and Machinery service and in coordination with the Betancuria City Council and other island services, is actively involved in preparing the infrastructure and natural areas where the main events in honor of Our Lady of La Peña, the patron saint of Fuerteventura, will take place.

Island president Lola García and area councilor Blas Acosta emphasize the importance of these measures to ensure the environment is in the best possible condition for the arrival of pilgrims, as well as to guarantee the safety and comfort of walkers along the route.

The crews of the “Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature” program are carrying out work in the Betancuria ravine extending to the town of Vega del Río Palmas. Their efforts focus on clearing vegetation, pruning the ravine margins, and removing waste.

These actions, together with the application of recebe (soil stabilization) in certain zones, improve traffic flow and safety for the thousands of participants in the La Peña events.

Special attention is being given to work on the ravine’s watercourse: pruning and removing weeds, dry palm fronds, and shrubs that could block natural water flow during rain, both in the channel itself and at the inlet and outlet of transverse drainage works. This reduces the risk of flooding that could mar the celebrations.

The “Fuerteventura, Beautiful by Nature” initiative, commissioned by the department led by Blas Acosta to Gesplan, outlines a 15‑month program spanning 2024‑2025. During this period:

  • €4 million of self‑funded financing will be invested.
  • Approximately 100 “proximity actions” will be carried out, directly impacting the conservation of the natural environment, the positive perception of visitors, and the quality of life for residents.
