Fuerteventura Holds Islandwide Event in La Oliva for International Women's Day

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura marked International Women’s Day (8 March) on Friday, March 6, with an institutional ceremony organized jointly with the La Oliva City Council.

The event took place at the Centro Cultural Raíz del Pueblo, where a manifesto was read by a municipal employee of La Oliva, an elderly resident of the town, and a student from IES La Oliva representing the youth.

The manifesto reaffirmed the institutional and social commitment to a “more just, more democratic and more egalitarian” society and called for a future without glass ceilings.

“Today we recognize the value of all women—those who were, those who are, and those who will be. Because when we acknowledge the worth of every woman, we strengthen the value of our society.”

Island President Lola García added:

“Today is a day to acknowledge something fundamental: if we are closer to equality now, it is thanks to the many women who came before us. Women who lived in a far more limited society, who worked without recognition, who supported entire families, and who propelled this island forward with a strength that was rarely acknowledged.”

“The value of women should be unquestionable. We must recognize it, defend it, and keep moving forward so it is never doubted again.”

In a statement released after the ceremony, La Oliva Mayor Isaí Blanco emphasized:

“Every step our society has taken toward greater justice and equality is backed by the silent, constant work of countless women: mothers, workers, entrepreneurs, students, and neighbours committed to their island. Women who have opened paths so that future generations can find a future with more opportunities.”

Social Action Counselor Víctor Alonso highlighted that equality policies and social services are not merely complementary but structural, forming the pillar of a fair society. He noted that this commitment translates into programs for care, prevention, and awareness; support for victims of gender‑based violence; educational initiatives; and the strengthening of the island’s resource network.

Area councilor Joana Pérez stated:

“In the face of inequalities, we reaffirm our commitment to effective public policies and efficient resources to advance together toward equality, which is built through consistency, education, and responsibility.”

The ceremony also featured poetry readings by IES La Oliva students, a contemporary dance performance by the group Danza y Arte Marta Equeter, a musical act by the IES La Oliva band, and a performance by singer Coralia, as detailed in the official communiqué.
