.# Fuerteventura Hosts the VII Regional Meeting of the Canary Islands and Municipalities Promoting Health Focused on Childhood, Adolescence and Families

More than 160 professionals from local administration and the health, social and educational sectors will take part in the VII Regional Meeting of the Canary Islands and Municipalities Promoting Health (ECIMPS), scheduled for Tuesday, February 3 – Thursday, February 5 in the municipality of La Oliva, Fuerteventura.

The event, organized by the Canary Islands Government’s Health Department through the Directorate General of Public Health, in collaboration with FECAM and FECAI, is positioned as a key forum to boost local health‑oriented public policies, foster institutional alliances, and showcase existing territorial experiences. It unfolds under the motto

“Health in the Canary Islands from childhood, adolescence, families and the community.”

The Municipal Auditorium of Corralejo will host plenary sessions and the central day of the meeting, bringing together representatives of the Canary Islands Government, town councils, island councils and professionals from various sectors to share knowledge and guide decision‑making from a comprehensive health perspective.

Currently, 68 of the 88 Canary Islands municipalities and six of the seven island councils are members or in the process of joining ECIMPS, making the archipelago a national benchmark for the number of local entities committed to health across all policy areas.

VI Plenary of ECIMPS

On Tuesday, February 3, the VI Plenary of ECIMPS—the strategy’s political representation body—will review work carried out since the last meeting, set future priorities, and select the venue for the next edition.

The agenda includes the conference

“Governing with a Childhood and Adolescence Perspective: When Parenting Becomes Public Policy,”

delivered by César González, teacher, psychologist and psychopedagogue specializing in family mediation, as well as the talk “Motivating Intervention from the Local Level,” presented by Juan Jesús Facundo, president of the FECAM Commission for Social Welfare and Health.

The plenary will close with the awarding of the Gánigo, ECIMPS’s emblem, to the host institutions. In the afternoon, the “Well‑Being Dialogues” session will address child‑youth violence from an ethical and community standpoint.

VII Regional Meeting

The VII Regional Meeting will be inaugurated on Wednesday, February 4 by Isaí Blanco, mayor of La Oliva; José Fernando Díaz‑Flores, Director General of Public Health; Ana Isabel Dorta, second vice‑president of FECAM and mayor of Guía de Isora; and Víctor Modesto Alonso, fifth vice‑president of the Fuerteventura Island Council.

The day will be organized into three thematic blocks:

  • Childhood and Adolescence – focusing on health promotion for young people.
  • The Role of Families – highlighting how families contribute to health promotion.
  • Community as a Caring and Educating Environment – exploring community‑wide health initiatives.

Each block will feature framework presentations and share municipal and island‑council experiences from across the archipelago.

During the meeting, the “Canarias Promueve Salud” distinction will be awarded to recognize exemplary health‑promotion practices with potential for replication in other municipalities.

Health Fair

The program concludes with a Health Fair, open to the public, taking place on Wednesday, February 4 and Thursday, February 5 along Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Corralejo. Local entities, schools, community projects and island health resources will participate, bringing healthy‑habit promotion directly to the public space.

With this edition, the Canary Islands Strategy of Islands and Municipalities Promoting Health reinforces its role as a pivotal tool for advancing toward a healthier, more participatory Canary Islands model, committed to the well‑being of its population from early ages.
