Fuerteventura Hosts Filming of Canadian Film Le Sablier by Oscar-Nominated Director Kim Nguyen

Production details

The Canadian feature Le Sablier (English title: The Hourglass) is being shot almost entirely on the island of Fuerteventura. The 27‑day shoot takes place in the municipalities of La Oliva and Puerto del Rosario. The film is produced by the Canadian company Item 7, with French co‑producer Noodles Production and production services provided by Fasten Films in Fuerteventura.

Story background

Le Sablier is based on true events. It dramatizes the ordeal of Édith Blais, a Canadian woman who was held captive for 450 days by jihadist forces in the Sahara Desert, alongside her Italian boyfriend Luca Tacchetto.

Economic impact on the island

  • The production is expected to inject €1.6 million into the local economy.
  • Approximately 50 jobs—both permanent and temporary—have been created for Fuerteventura residents.

“Having a production of this caliber on the island is a great opportunity for Fuerteventura,” said Lola García, President of the Cabildo, during a visit to the set.

Nereida Calero, Managing Director of the Fuerteventura Film Commission, highlighted the importance of such projects for the island’s economy and employment, noting that the film will generate around fifty local contracts.

Summary

The arrival of Kim Nguyen’s Oscar‑nominated director team brings a high‑profile international film to Fuerteventura, promising a significant financial boost and new employment opportunities while telling a gripping real‑life story of survival in the Sahara.
