Fuerteventura on alert for coastal hazards, pre‑alert for wind, rain and storms

Fuerteventura has been placed under various alert and pre‑alert situations for adverse weather phenomena from today until further notice, according to the Island Council’s Department of Security and Emergencies.

The most significant concern is the state of the sea, which is at alert level for coastal phenomena, especially affecting the northern and western coasts of the island. A marked deterioration in maritime conditions is expected, with strong waves and combined seas.

In addition, a pre‑alert for wind, rain, storms and flooding remains in force, with gusts that could exceed 70 km/h in different parts of the island.

The situation is compounded by an update from the Canary Islands Government’s Directorate General of Emergencies, which has declared a rain alert starting at 10:00 a.m. on 19 March under the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Weather Phenomena (PEFMA).

Forecasts predict a persistent and intense rain episode across the archipelago, hitting the western islands and high‑altitude areas hardest, while also reaching Fuerteventura and Lanzarote from Friday morning. In these eastern islands, precipitation will generally be lighter but could become widespread.

From a technical standpoint, the activation of the Island Emergency Plan (PEIN) is not currently recommended for Fuerteventura. Nevertheless, authorities stress the need for extreme caution, especially in coastal zones, wind‑exposed areas, and ravines.

The Island Council’s Department of Emergencies will continue to monitor the situation closely, assess its evolution in the coming hours, and, if necessary, implement additional measures.

Institutions remind the public to follow official recommendations and avoid unnecessary risks while this period of meteorological instability persists.
