Fuerteventura President Lola García Strongly Defends the Canary Islands Decree

Lola García positively values the proposal, “taking into account the reality of each island.”

Lola García, president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, has voiced her support for the Decreto Canarias during a meeting convened by the President of the Government of the Canary Islands together with the Canary Islands Federation (FECAI) and the Canary Municipalities Federation (FECAM). The gathering was intended to discuss the proposal that the Canary Executive will forward to the State.

Background

Representatives from the Canary Government, municipal councils, and island cabildos attended the session. García praised the spirit of the decree, emphasizing that the islands can no longer wait for the State to approve budgets needed to advance essential public rights and services.

“It is not about demanding privileges, but about fulfilling pending obligations to the Canary Islands, especially in a territory recognized as an outermost region.”

Key Points

  • Equity Across Islands – García highlighted the need to consider the specific circumstances of each island to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most, preventing any island or individual from being left behind.
  • Challenges for Fuerteventura – The island faces issues such as geographic isolation, higher transport, energy, and water costs, and a strong dependence on vulnerable sectors.
  • Territorial Cohesion – She stressed that preserving the principle of territorial cohesion is essential for balanced development.

“We have emphasized the importance of taking into account the reality of each island, to guarantee equity and that assistance reaches those who need it most, so that no island or person is left behind.”

Conclusion

As president of both the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the FECAI, Lola García affirmed that coordinated efforts will continue to refine the decree and defend the interests of the entire archipelago.

“We will keep working in a coordinated manner to improve the decree and protect the interests of the whole archipelago.”
