Fuerteventura PSOE Accuses SCS of Hiding Over 300 Patients from Surgical Waiting List

The Socialist Party (PSOE) of Fuerteventura has denounced what it calls a “perversion” of health data on the island by the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS). According to socialist deputy Manuel Hernández, more than 300 patients have been removed from the surgical waiting list and placed into an “administrative limbo,” effectively “masking” the official figures.

“They have taken more than 300 patients from Fuerteventura out of the system who believe they are on the waiting list for surgery, and yet they are no longer there. They do not count in the official statistics nor in the waiting‑time data. It is indecent,” Hernández asserted.

An “Administrative Limbo”

Data gathered by the PSOE indicate that patients who cannot be operated on for work‑related or personal reasons are transferred to a parallel archive labeled “Non‑Structural.” Although they still need surgery, they disappear from the official list.

Currently, the real number of people awaiting surgery in Fuerteventura stands at 1,243 patients: 935 remain on the official list, while 308 are recorded as “Non‑Structural.”

Increase in Waiting Times

The PSOE claims this practice has driven the actual average waiting time from the 56.88 days reported by the SCS to 176 days, a rise of 309 %.

For Hernández, this represents a “crooked management” that jeopardizes public health and recklessly endangers the quality of life and life expectancy of the island’s patients.

A “Fictitious Image”

The socialist deputy argues that these practices create a distorted picture of the island’s health management.

“The SCS is using the surgical waiting list to hide the real impact and fabricate a fictitious image of good management, while hundreds of majoreros and majoreras suffer the consequences,” he concluded.
