Fuerteventura PSOE Urges a “Strong and Steadfast” Defense of the Posei

The Socialist Party of Fuerteventura announced in a press release its intention to take the initiative in the face of a serious outlook for the island’s agricultural, livestock and fishing sectors. It demands a “strong and steadfast defence, without doubts or subtleties,” to guarantee the continuity of the POSEI programme, which is currently uncertain after the publication of the new EU Multi‑annual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2028‑2034.

José Cabrera, Secretary for Municipal Policy, Primary Sector, Food and Food Sovereignty of the PSOE of Fuerteventura, said: “The POSEI programme is essential for our people of the land and sea; it is our right as ultra‑peripheral European regions. Socialists stand shoulder‑to‑shoulder with Canary Islands sectoral organisations and anyone who joins this fight.”

Cabrera stresses that any regression would jeopardise the future of ultra‑peripheral regions such as Fuerteventura and the broader Canary Islands, insisting that “it is time to act together.”

The 2028‑2034 MFF includes a reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). According to the Official Journal of the European Union, the implementation of this central package would breach Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which guarantees specific measures for the permanent challenges faced by the EU’s outermost regions (RUP) – including Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Réunion, Mayotte, Saint Martin, the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. This breach is deemed unacceptable as it contravenes primary EU law.

The proposal removes vital instruments for the RUP, such as the agricultural POSEI, the Feder‑RUP, and cost‑overrun compensation mechanisms that are crucial for fisheries and aquaculture. The result would be a 20 % reduction in the financial resources that the RUP currently receive from the EU.

Consequently, the PSOE of Fuerteventura will forge a common cause with Canary Islands sectoral organisations and any institutions that share the defence of RUP rights and the primary sector within the European Union.
