Fuerteventura records 12 drowning deaths from January to October 2026
Fuerteventura had the second-highest drowning death toll in the Canaries in the first ten months of 2026, according to a group that works to prevent accidents in the water.
Fuerteventura recorded 12 drowning deaths between January and October 2026. This was the second-highest island total in the Canary Islands. The figures were compiled by Canarias, 1500 Km de Costa, a group that works to prevent accidents in the water.
Noticias Fuerteventura reported the figures on 1 November. Across the islands, 59 people drowned, up from 54 in the same period in 2025. Tenerife recorded 21 deaths, followed by Fuerteventura with 12 and Gran Canaria with 11.
The report does not break down the deaths in Fuerteventura by location, age or activity.
Eight children died across the Canaries
Eight children drowned across the islands during the ten-month period. Five died in the summer months. The group’s studies show this was the highest number of child drowning deaths in at least a decade.
In total, 31 children were involved in accidents at beaches and swimming pools across the islands. Eight died, 11 had serious injuries, five had moderate injuries and two had minor injuries. Five were unharmed. These figures cover all the Canary Islands, not just Fuerteventura.
Incidents during coastal alerts
The group said 23 of those who died across the Canaries had entered the sea during official warnings. They accounted for 39% of the total. At the time, the Canary Islands government had pre-alerts or alerts in force for adverse coastal conditions.
In October alone, four people died and 15 others were affected by accidents in the water across the islands. Of those 15, six were rescued unharmed. The source gives no separate October total for Fuerteventura.
