Fuerteventura seeks conference and event tourists at IMEX Frankfurt
Fuerteventura has intensified its promotion as a destination for congresses, meetings, incentives, and professional events during its participation in IMEX Frankfurt 2026, one of the leading international MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) trade fairs.
Boosting MICE Promotion
The island’s tourism board took part in the fair from 19 to 21 May at Messe Frankfurt, under the joint umbrella of Turespaña and Promotur Turismo de Canarias, with its own space as a co‑exhibitor within the Spanish pavilion. Over the three days, it held meetings with international MICE buyers to showcase Fuerteventura’s offerings, including the Congress Palace, unique venues, event‑capable accommodations, and specialised services for professional groups.
Direct Air Connectivity
A key selling point highlighted was Fuerteventura’s direct flight connections to major European hubs such as Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Munich, Paris, Madrid and Barcelona—crucial for facilitating the organisation of international events.
“Bleisure” Destination
The board also promoted the island as a bleisure destination, a growing trend that blends business travel with leisure. Fuerteventura aims to be a place where meetings or congresses can be held while participants also enjoy the island’s climate, nature, scenery and complementary activities.
Economic Impact
The push into MICE tourism is also driven by economic considerations. According to data cited by Turespaña, business travellers in Spain spend an average of €258 per day, roughly 30 % more than typical leisure tourists.
IMEX Frankfurt Overview
IMEX Frankfurt is regarded as one of the most important meetings and events fairs in Europe and worldwide, attracting professionals from over 150 countries and more than 3,100 exhibitors each year. In the 2026 edition, the Fuerteventura tourism board reported the presence of 4,200 European tourism professionals specialised in MICE.
Fuerteventura is also a member of the Spain Convention Bureau, the body under the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces responsible for promoting MICE destinations across Spain.
Official Statements
“The MICE segment exactly matches the destination profile we want to consolidate, with quality infrastructure, direct connectivity to major European markets, and a natural setting that turns any event into a unique experience,” said Marlene Figueroa, Tourism Councillor of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and Vice‑President of the Island Tourism Board.
Figueroa added that the board will continue working to position Fuerteventura as an international hub for congresses, meetings and incentives, pursuing a strategy aimed at diversifying the island’s tourism economy.
