Fuerteventura tenants’ union calls housing protest on 11 November in Puerto del Rosario

The Sindicato de Inquilinas de Fuerteventura has called a protest for 11:00 on 11 November outside the Spanish state’s island office in Puerto del Rosario.

The tenants’ union in Fuerteventura has called a housing protest in Puerto del Rosario for 11:00 on 11 November 2026. There is also a wider call for a general stoppage that day.

The protest will take place outside the Dirección Insular de la Administración General del Estado, the Spanish state’s island office. The Sindicato de Inquilinas de Fuerteventura is urging people to join because housing is hard to find. It also says public authorities have not done enough to address the problem.

Pau Valverde spoke on behalf of the union in an interview published by La Voz de Fuerteventura on 5 November. Valverde said ongoing public action was needed to change housing policy, no matter which party is in power.

What the union is demanding

The union wants central government to intervene in the property market. It also wants local councils to manage Sareb properties as public housing with affordable rents. It is seeking guarantees that these homes will stay in the public housing stock. The union also wants to ban property purchases by so-called vulture funds.

At Canary Islands level, its main demand is for areas to be formally declared under housing pressure. Valverde also urged the regional government to use its powers to provide more public housing.

Valverde argued that switching homes from long-term lets to holiday lets forces residents out and pushes up rents. Valverde cited La Oliva as an example of this pressure.

Valverde drew a distinction between owners who let one or two homes to add to their income and those who use larger property portfolios for speculation. The union says it has no problem with the first group.
